APPEARANCE: Zari Tomaz played by Tala Ashe
CANON POINT: 309: Beebo the God of War
BACKGROUND: Here, have a wiki
PERSONALITY:
The first thing most people will notice about Zari is that she’s opinionated. If she thinks you’re wrong, she’ll tell you. If she thinks that there is a better course of action, she’ll let you know if she doesn’t just take over and do it herself. A rebel to her core, Zari feels that her purpose in life is to speak truth to power, and doesn’t let herself be swayed from her convictions. Growing up in a world where ARGUS, a black ops military organization, restricted a number of fundamental rights including a practice of all religion, Zari was raised in a world where who she was as a Muslin and simply existing as a metahuman (a person with powers) were illegal. By the time she meets the Legends, a time traveling band of heroes trying to protect the timeline, she has an extensive rap sheet developed from trying to fight back, even when she lost her family in the process. Her moral core is where she draws most of her strength and what carries her forward day to day. Zari is very passionate about what she believes is right and refuses to compromise those beliefs without good reason – like the unraveling of time and space.
She’s also an opportunist, resourceful and willing to take advantage of opportunities in order to get what she wants. When the Legends come to save her, she sees their interference as an opportunity to rescue her family totem from an ARGUS prison and reclaim part of her family legacy. She also is one to make the most of a bad situation by bending the rules to her advantage. She sees the opportunities they have in fixing anachronisms, or disruptions in the normal flow of history, as her opportunity to try and make history better. While the anachronisms are still resolved, if there are people she can help, like Helen of Troy, she does her best to try and bring them back to a better situation.
She also is loyal to a fault, and will do whatever it takes to protect her people. When her brother sacrificed himself to save her and their parents, she carries that guilt for a long time, blaming herself as a result. Being the older sibling, Zari felt that she should have been the one protecting him, even if he was the totem bearer at the time. She tried to argue the possibility of going back in time to save her brother’s life, but was shot down, given that they didn’t know how it would affect the timeline. That doesn’t seem to phase her however – after Martin Stein dies, she advises Jefferson Jackson to try and save him, even if it’s technically against the rules. As far as she’s concerned, you do what you have to do to protect the people you care about.
These are the small kinds of frustrations that Zari tries to advocate for in the cases of the anachronisms, as she doesn’t believe that people should be forced to live in a future that is terrible. She wants to make the world better for other people, even if she can’t do that for herself.
Zari is a Muslim, and that fact is a fundamental part of her identity. Despite the fact that she was arrested for it several times, she still is connected to that spiritual part of herself and never abandoned it for the sake of her own safety. She’s not a religious extremist, trying to force her religion on other people or committing violence in the name of it, but she still keeps the tenants of her faith to the best of her ability.
When it comes to the game, HATHAWAY would fall under the umbrella of doing what she has to do in order to make her world a better place. While she would be careful with regards of what she agrees to do for them, and would be concerned about an organization like HATHAWAY going the route of ARGUS, she wants to do what she can to help other people. She’s still trying to really learn and lean into what it means to be a totem bearer and having more information on Mallus will help her be better able to protect her world and stopped what happened to Martin Stein from happening to the rest of her team.
ABILITIES:
Zari is a totem bearer for the Air Totem, one of a set of mystical totems from Zambesi that provide the wielder with different abilities. In the case of the air totem it makes her basically an air bender – she can control the air around her and use it to enhance her own martial arts, push people away from her using air gusts, or even short range flight. However, without the totem, Zari can do none of this, and she’s just a normal human.
As a normal human, Zari is a rather accomplished hacker, has some fight training, and can put away an impressive amount of food.
INVENTORY:
As many changes of clothes as she can fit in a duffle (if you need me to be more specific let me know, but I figure a week’s worth at least.) Her hacker gear – tablet, phone, assorted connection cables, etc. The Air Totem - abilities listed above. A tote bag of fresh fruit and veggies because she does not trust HATHAWAY to have fresh food and is worried about going back to military rations. Her super suit, just in case. It has no special abilities, it just looks cool.
HATHAWAY.
SUITABILITY:
While Zari isn’t particularly designed to be a team player as a hacker, she is capable of being a team player when needed. Initially she worked with her family against ARGUS in order to stop them from persecuting metahumans. In addition, she works well with the Legends, who invited her to travel with them to start Mallus. While she is headstrong and guilty of not following the orders to the letter exactly, with the incentive in play and their sharing similar goals in fixing anomalies in time, Zari will easily agree to making sure her missions get accomplished, she just might be coloring outside the lines a little bit.
I’m all for IC consequences for said coloring if the mods deem it necessary, however. Zari is a rule breaker by nature, but she does tend to follow the spirit of the order, if not the letter. As an example of the kind of thing Zari might do: In episode 306, the Legends traveled back to the early days of Hollywood to find Helen of Troy who had been misplaced there by an anachronism. After rescuing her from the very bloody movie mogul war that she was about to start through no fault of her own, Zari recognized that Helen didn’t want to continue to watch men trying to kill each other in the name of her beauty. Zari manages to find a loophole in Helen’s story – her disappearing halfway through the war doesn’t affect the war itself, so she returns Helen to the correct time period, but not specifically to Troy – she takes her to Themyscira instead. It erases the anachronism but still allows Helen to be in a place where she can actually be happy.
INCENTIVE: More information on Mallus, a cosmic entity, and ways the Legends can take him out to protect time.
